Domain name -- CEO's future business card

July 8, 2017 (Sat). Domain name is an unfamiliar term for many people. For those who have come across it, they probably think that domain name is used to build website. Actually, domain name has other uses as well: such as for investment as financial products. It can also be used to create a business card with personality. Today, I'll talk about the relationship between domain name and business card.

A traditional business card usually includes your company name, job title, phone number, and many more. If any part of it is changed, the whole card has to be reprinted -- which takes time, work, and money. So, can we have a business card which does not change in its content? The answer is yes, and the secret lies in the use of domain name and QR code.

Let's look at an example. In the image above is my business card, which contains my personal domain name and QR code. The QR code is linked to; scanning the code takes you to which will forward to my profile page on LinkedIn. Now, how can we design such business card? First, you need to pick a suitable personal domain name. "" is the best choice because it can be used globally. If you only plan to use the card in China, then .cn is fine. You can also consider other domain extensions which can add personality to your image -- such as, 王大牛.世界 (Chinese), and

Below are examples of some interesting extensions. For a comprehensive list of domain extensions, refer to

Occupation: ceo, dentist, doctor, lawyer
Sports: fishing, football, golf, tennis
Interests: blog, book, camera, car, photography
City: london, paris, boston, tokyo, vegas
Chinese: 世界, 慈善, 我爱你, 时尚, 游戏

After the domain name is decided, you can use a QR code generator to generate an image file. There are many free QR code generators on the internet. Just do a Baidu search to find one you like. My favorite is Once you have your domain name and corresponding QR code image file ready, you can give them to your business card designer. Of course, you can also add other elements you desire to the card. Finally, decide how you are going to use the domain name. For example, you can create a simple personal website or simply forward it to your favorite social media account.

QR code enables you to freely use domain extensions that are not mainstream. Perhaps in the near future, the use of domain name and QR code in business cards may become a fashion. You may use different domain extensions to create multiple business cards for different occasions to show different personalities.

Finally, I want to thank Eric Lyon of for designing the card used in this article. Eric Lyon is also the administrator of the world's largest domain forum Namepros.
